Written by Margie Wilhelm, host mother to Davit Zoidze '18 (Georgia/CA)
As a five time host family we know each student is an individual who brings a different and unique experience to your home. We have a bond with all our exchange children and have learned something new about the world and about our family through each of them.
This year, the decision to host again was difficult because our two children were both going to be seniors, one in high school and one college and we wanted to make sure they felt supported during their senior year. Once we saw Davit’s profile, we knew he would be a good fit for our family and would only make Justin and Katelyn’s year more memorable. Saying “yes” to hosting Davit gave us another son whom we will forever love.
Davit was part of the family from the day he arrived. His easygoing, respectful and humorous personality made him an easy fit. Our son Justin and Davit became buddies who shared many great high school experiences. Their time together at school and football helped forge their brother like relationship. Katelyn, our daughter, and Davit’s similar personalities made it easy for them to spend time together, instantly kidding or fighting about the zombie apocalypse.
Whether it was bonding (and laughing) over Stranger Things or the Office, or crazy intense games of UNO or chess, it was the best of times when we were all together.
Having Davit in our home really brought a balance. He was as respectful as he was humorous and was always ready to help out which endeared him to my husband. His love of basketball he shared with all of us. I know more about basketball than I ever dreamed I would (lol). Our extended family also found Davit to be a great kid, a favorite as well.
I can honestly say each day with Davit was a gift we will treasure. I have no doubt we will be meeting him in Georgia in the future. We can’t wait to meet the young parents who raised such an extraordinary young man who we have grown to love like our own.
The decision to host again this year was one of the best decisions we’ve ever made. He is missed but he will carry a piece of my heart wherever life takes him.
